Summary
The museum café is also open during the museum's opening days. Visitors can have a drink or eat a sandwich in the cozy museum café.Detailed description
The Sea and Harbor Museum consists of 3 floors with a total of 13 rooms, museum café and reception. During the opening afternoons there are always 3 attendants (1 on each floor), someone at reception and someone in the museum café.
An attendant supervises the rooms on the relevant floor and, if they have any questions, provides the visitor with information about what is exhibited in the rooms. The topics in the rooms are:
- history of digging the North Sea Canal
- origin and development of IJmuiden
- fishing
- industry in IJmuiden and along the North Sea Canal
- Pilotage, Vletterlieden and KNRM
- Tugboats and salvages
- Scheveningen Radio and radio operator
- Engine hall with old (ship) engines and miniature models
A reception employee
- receives visitors and sells tickets
- gives a brief explanation about the museum
- explains to children how the quests work
- explains how the audio tours work with a smartphone
- sells books and souvenirs
- can use a modern cash register or is able to learn to do so
A museum café employee:
- creates a cozy atmosphere in the museum café
- sells coffee, tea, soft drinks, wine, beer, sandwiches and cookies
- puts away used glassware/cups and washes in dishwasher
- cleans tables, bar, etc
- can use a modern cash register or is able to learn to do so
For all positions we are looking for people who like to help others, look neat, have a cheerful character, enjoy working in a team and like to go the extra mile.
The museum is open on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. We ask that you schedule at least 2 afternoons per month. You can decide for yourself which afternoons you will spend in the museum each month. You are also very welcome if you only want/can work during the summer season.
It is nice for an attendant if he or she has some affinity with the maritime world and/or IJmuiden and the North Sea Canal or is able to learn this knowledge.
